Interior Landscape Series
Throughout my creative practice I explore identity, seeking ways to connect with the different threads of my Papua New Guinean, European and Torres Strait Islander heritage. The carving techniques and storytelling aesthetics of Papua New Guinean and Torres Strait Islander culture are combined with the Western influences of my bringing. They converge within my practice as I explore and grows my own story. In Papua New Guinean and Torres Strait Islander cultural practices, the use of multi-disciplinary art forms occur in everyday objects, rituals and communal gatherings to serve everyday purposes. By translating my artworks into a collection of custom-designed rugs, this unique artistic style brings together diverse communities of people. The rug, often placed in a domestic or commercial setting, becomes the celebratory heart of a gathering.
Many people are emotionally fulfilled when viewing or being present in natural environments. By incorporating a wide range of organic patterns and imagery, my artwork aims to include all communities of people through this relatable connection to nature. With four designs – “Complex Ecologies”, “Changing Seasons”, “Native Resonances” and “Propagation” – this collection of rugs becomes one organic body of work, following my journey through native and introduced plant life from both botanical gardens and the natural ecologies of Meanjin/Brisbane.
My rugs can be custom sized, shaped and coloured to suit any commercial or residential space! For rug enquires visit: Designer Rugs Australia.
