Rosalie Series, 2018-2020

Artworks Rosalie (ochre) and Rosalie (sunset) investigate the displacement of an antique toy bear in a suburban Brisbane landscape. Inspired by a series of photographs, the process of taking this bear on a journey evokes the curiosity of childhood, reimagining the familiar and seeking knowledge through exploration. By embracing this process, I am able to incorporate the abstract nature of relief-print carving to reconnect with the micro worlds of my suburban environment. Carving is not simply used as a tool for visualising this environment but one that elevates my artistic curiosity and maintains a connection with my childhood home.

Extending from this series, Rosalie Place I & II draw on the minute areas of the domestic that I have become almost too familiar with during the course of Covid-19 isolation. Combining elements of still life with local flora allows me to continue to create a new world which my bear and curiosity can adventure to. The artistic process of Rosalie I & II also allows me to appreciate the unique characteristics of my home that would often go unnoticed, which I hope can resonate with viewers.

This series was presented in group exhibition, DEPART 2020 at Onespace Gallery: Exhibition Room Brochure.
